EtherNet/IP is an industrial network protocol built on standard Ethernet and the Common Industrial Protocol, or CIP. It is widely used to exchange control, status, configuration, and diagnostic data among PLCs, drives, remote I/O, and other devices.
Implicit and explicit communication
Implicit connections carry scheduled or cyclic I/O data. They are used when a controller needs regular command and status data from a device. Explicit messages are request-and-response transactions used for configuration, diagnostics, and less time-critical data.
What must match
- Device IP address and subnet
- Controller project path and module identity
- Electronic keying and firmware expectations
- Connection size, ownership, and requested packet settings
- Switch, VLAN, and cable infrastructure
Practical troubleshooting
Start with power, link status, addressing, and duplicate IP risk. Then compare the online device with the project configuration and inspect connection fault information. If the controller cannot be reached from the engineering workstation, begin with Studio 5000 connection problems. If runtime devices are failing, see CompactLogix communications errors.
Good network practice
Maintain an address schedule, device list, switch documentation, backups, and a change record. Do not change production network settings casually. Network work should follow the plant’s approved process and involve qualified controls or IT personnel.
