A collaborative robot, or cobot, is a robot designed with functions that can support applications where people and robots may work in closer proximity. “Collaborative” describes an application and risk assessment, not a blanket guarantee that every installation can operate without guarding.
How cobot applications differ
Cobots often emphasize simplified setup, force or power limits, hand-guiding, and flexible changeover. The useful result depends on payload, reach, speed, tooling, product, process hazards, and the way people interact with the cell.
Safety still needs engineering
Risk assessment, safeguarding, emergency stops, tooling, pinch points, sharp edges, payload, speed, and unexpected restart must be evaluated. A cobot may need scanners, fencing, reduced-speed zones, or other protective measures for a particular task.
Typical applications
- Machine tending and part transfer
- Pick and place
- Inspection and simple assembly
- Packaging and palletizing support
Controls integration
The robot must exchange ready, start, complete, fault, and permit signals with the PLC and HMI. Clear handshakes and recovery states matter as much as robot motion. TechControl provides robot cell design and integration.
