Industrial automation commissioning is the controlled process of verifying that a machine’s panel, PLC, HMI, drives, robots, safety functions, field devices, and sequence work together as intended. It starts before the first production cycle and ends with a documented handoff.
Typical commissioning stages
- Inspect drawings, components, wiring, software, and prerequisites.
- Power up and verify control-panel conditions.
- Check I/O and device identity.
- Test safety and manual functions.
- Run dry cycles before introducing product.
- Test production, faults, recovery, and operator workflows.
Why dry-cycle testing matters
Dry cycles expose wrong rotation, missing feedback, handshake errors, timing assumptions, and unsafe recovery before material or product is involved. The team should test expected failures, not only the happy path.
Handoff and documentation
Record backups, parameters, network settings, as-built changes, open items, training, and acceptance results. Commissioning is not complete if only one programmer knows how to recover the machine.
TechControl provides machine commissioning, PLC/HMI programming, and troubleshooting for existing industrial equipment.
